CMS Issues Historic Star Quality Rating System For Nursing HomesFor the first time in history, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today released quality ratings for each of the nation's 15,800 nursing homes that participate in Medicare or Medicaid. Facilities are assigned star ratings from a low of one star to a high of five stars based on health inspection surveys, staffing information, and quality of care measures. The ratings are publicly available on the agency's Nursing Home Compare Web site at www.medicare.gov.

NMC Guidance For The Care Of Older People October 2008Following a period of consultation the NMC will publish its guidance for the care of older people in February 2009. The guidance is intended to make a positive difference to the way that older people are cared for in all care settings by promoting individuality, dignity, independence and choice. Around 300 people including nurses, carers and older people took part in a series of focus groups that were held around the UK in October 2008.

Judy Waterlow Jones Wins Prestigious AwardThe Nursing Times have named a retired clinical nurse teacher from Musgrove as one of the top ten of the most influential nurses of the last sixty years. Judy Waterlow Jones, who lives in Henlade, now gives her time to Musgrove Park Hospital voluntarily, but before she retired in 1988 she was one of the Trust's clinical nurse teachers. The Nursing Times have named her as number ten in its list of 'Diamond 20' nurses, a list of the top twenty nurses nationally.
Nurses Association: Nursing Education Cuts Will Worsen Shortage The allocation of $2 million in the 2008-09 state budget for nursing education at State University of New York (SUNY) institutions has borne fruit. Because of this funding, about 230 additional students were able to enter SUNY nursing programs this year. Unfortunately, the Executive Budget released recently will cut that funding by 15%.
